Why We Build Everything on Laravel

Most frameworks give you a way to write code. Laravel gives you a way to build, deploy, monitor, and maintain an application — all from the same ecosystem, maintained by the same team, following the same conventions.

That's why we use Laravel for every project at Double Click Technologies. Not because of syntax preferences or benchmark numbers, but because no other framework covers the full lifecycle without forcing you to glue together 15 different tools.

The question every client eventually asks

"Why Laravel and not something else?"

Fair question. A client investing in custom software deserves to know why we chose our tools. And the answer should never be "because it's what we know."

Our choice is an agency decision, not a developer preference. A developer picks the framework they enjoy. An agency picks the framework that lets them deliver, maintain, and hand off projects reliably — across dozens of engagements, under real constraints.

What we actually evaluated

Before standardizing our stack, we worked with Django, Express, and Rails on various projects. Here's what we observed, without dogma:

Django (Python) — Great for rapid prototyping and data science. But the deployment and admin ecosystem is fragmented. Every project requires assembling separate pieces. And the Django developer pool in Algeria is thin.

Express / NestJS (Node.js) — Fast, flexible, great for real-time APIs. But total structural freedom becomes a trap in an agency: two Node.js developers never structure a project the same way. Onboarding is slow, technical debt accumulates fast.

Rails (Ruby) — Philosophically closest to Laravel, and we genuinely enjoyed working with it. But the Ruby market in North Africa is nearly nonexistent. Hiring, subcontracting, or handing off a Rails project to a client's in-house team here isn't realistic.

Laravel (PHP) — Convention over configuration. A rich, unified ecosystem. Abundant PHP talent in Algeria. It won on every axis that matters to an agency.

The Laravel ecosystem: from first line of code to production monitoring

This is the core argument, and it's the reason we keep choosing Laravel over everything else. Laravel isn't just a framework — it's a complete platform covering the entire application lifecycle. Development, deployment, monitoring, administration. Everything is first-party, maintained by the same team, with the same conventions and the same documentation quality.

Development

Everything starts with composer create-project. Within minutes: a standardized project structure, an ORM (Eloquent), a template engine (Blade), routing, and migration management.

But it's the layer above that makes the difference:

Breeze / Jetstream — Full authentication (login, registration, 2FA, profile management) in one command. You never rewrite an auth system again.
Sanctum — Simple, secure token-based API authentication for SPAs and mobile apps.
Socialite — OAuth with Google, Facebook, GitHub, and dozens of other providers. A few lines of code.
Scout — Full-text search connected to Meilisearch or Algolia. Add use Searchable to a model and you're done.
Cashier — Stripe and Paddle integration for recurring billing. Subscriptions, free trials, PDF invoices — all ready.
Nova — Complete admin panel generated from Eloquent models. What used to take weeks now takes hours.

Deployment

This is where most frameworks leave you on your own. Not Laravel.

Forge — Provisions and configures servers (DigitalOcean, AWS, Hetzner) automatically. SSH, SSL, databases, queues, cron jobs — all managed through one interface. One-click deploys.
Vapor — Serverless deployment on AWS Lambda. Auto-scaling without infrastructure management.
Envoyer — Zero-downtime deployment. Users never see a maintenance page while you ship.

A client asks us to go to production? We don't spend three days wiring up artisanal CI/CD pipelines. We use Forge, connect the Git repo, and deployment is automated in 30 minutes. This is a big part of why our projects reach production faster than clients expect.

Monitoring and operations

The app is live. Now you need to watch it.

Telescope — Debug dashboard recording requests, exceptions, SQL queries, queued jobs, sent emails. Essential in development, useful in staging.
Pulse — Production performance monitoring. Response times, slow queries, memory usage — no external tooling required.
Horizon — Dashboard and monitoring for Redis queues. Real-time visibility into which jobs are running, failing, and why.
Pail — Real-time log tailing from the terminal with filters. No more tail -f on a 500 MB file.

With any other framework, assembling this monitoring stack requires 4 or 5 separate tools, each with its own config, its own update cycle, its own breaking changes. With Laravel, everything is native, everything communicates, everything updates together. This native stack also makes post-launch maintenance straightforward — the monitoring tooling is already there.

Structure that enforces discipline

The ecosystem gets you far. But there's a second thing Laravel gives you that's just as important: structure.

Laravel is opinionated by design. There's a defined place for routes, controllers, models, migrations, form requests, policies, service providers, events, listeners, jobs, and middleware. You don't decide where things go — the framework already decided.

This sounds restrictive. In practice, it's liberating — especially in an agency context.

Form Requests handle validation. Policies handle authorization. Jobs handle async work. Events and Listeners decouple side effects. There's never a debate about where code goes — the convention exists, you follow it, and the next developer will find everything exactly where they expect it.

When a new developer joins a Laravel project, they already know the folder structure. They know where business logic lives, where validation happens, where authorization is enforced. They don't need to reverse-engineer someone else's architecture philosophy. The project follows the same conventions they've seen in every other Laravel codebase.

This consistency compounds across projects. Our team can switch between three active client projects in a week without a context-switching penalty, because every project has the same bones. The same patterns, the same naming, the same flow from request to response.

Compare this to Express or NestJS, where every project is a unique snowflake. Every team invents its own folder structure, its own patterns for validation, its own approach to middleware. Onboarding someone onto an Express project means learning that specific project's architecture. Onboarding someone onto a Laravel project means knowing Laravel.

For clients, this translates directly into lower maintenance costs and faster feature delivery — because any competent Laravel developer can pick up the project and be productive quickly, not just the person who originally built it.

Where Laravel falls short — and what we do

We're not dogmatic. Laravel has limits, and we know them:

Compute-heavy tasks and AI — Python is still superior for machine learning and complex data processing. We use Python microservices (FastAPI) for these cases, connected to the Laravel application via API.

Highly interactive frontends — Blade handles 80% of interfaces well. For the 20% that need a rich SPA experience (real-time dashboards, visual editors), we use React or Next.js on the frontend with Laravel as the API backend.

The monolith temptation — Laravel makes it so easy to add features that you can end up with a monolith that's hard to break apart. We enforce strict modularization rules from day one to avoid this.

The key is knowing your tool's boundaries and compensating intelligently — not searching for a framework that does everything.

The talent factor in Algeria

One last argument, and not a minor one: the job market.

PHP is the most widely taught server-side language in Algerian universities. The PHP developer pool in North Africa is large. Laravel is the dominant PHP framework — by far.

In practical terms: if a client needs to grow their team, bring a project in-house, or hire a freelancer for an update, they'll find Laravel developers. It's a pragmatic choice as much as a technical one.

Building a project in Ruby on Rails or Elixir in Algeria means locking yourself into a dependency on two or three people in the entire country. We don't do that to our clients.

What this means for you

If you're evaluating an agency and they can't explain why they chose their stack — or worse, they switch frameworks every project — that's a red flag.

A stack choice is a choice about maintainability, hiring, delivery speed, and total cost over 3 years. Not a popularity contest on Hacker News.
